Zoe Saldana for Vanity Fair: Harlem Renaissance: Uptown Girl Shoot, Aug 2009
(via lisamphoenix and songstersmiscellany)
This is gorgeous. The Harlem Renaissance deserves more stories told about it - such an interesting time with interesting interpersonal dynamics among the main players.
On another note, it’s unusual to see a fashion shoot so dominated by men and menswear, though the one woman is the focal point in all these shots.

plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…being a ruthless, self-aware villainess whose clothes serve a dual purpose, enthralling people with luminescent colors and intricate lace details while constantly communicating a threat through vials of poison hidden nestled near bright jewels, exquisitely patterned military breastplates, and slim garottes woven into seams.

Lace and jewels and ruthlessness and all things I adore
plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…inhabiting the role of queen midas, a leader whose existence is a constant, conscious performance of her mythological meaning, heritage, authority, and invulnerability. she has a crystallized understanding of her place in the narrative and knows precisely how to glean and retain power within that framework.

plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…operating as queen midas, a shrewd politician and recognized embodiment of a movement associating displays of luxury and divine worship. she creaks under the burden of her golden wardrobe’s unimaginable weight, weighty straps cleaving into her shoulders, a living ode to privilege and theatricality.

plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…boldly collecting hearts (literally and figuratively), experiencing her own humanity so viscerally that she is turned inside out (literally and figuratively). her anatomy is the tangible manifestation of her narrative arc. her body is her battlefield, her womanhood a weapon of war.

Yes, yes, yes to everything skeletal
plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…one is a mermaid who slurps sea foam and has a halo of minnows darting around her floating tendrils of hair. in between exfoliating with coral stalks and licking pirate coins to taste the tangy metal, she mercifully hurtles sailors into the pressurized depths instead of elaborately punishing them for their privilege of mortality in creative and disturbing ways, like her little sister does.

Oh I love all these ocean-themed ones
